From Papyrus to Nano-fibrils:
The History and Science of Paper
The art of papermaking and the underlying sciences and engineering
principles that drive the manufacturing of paper and pulp constitute one
of the oldest disciplines in the world. Paper science is thousands of
years old and has made many of the civilized world's greatest
innovations possible. It has led to advancements in communications,
manufacturing, transportation, healthcare, food, entertainment and
virtually every other area of our lives. Paper and packaging are only a
few of the most easily recognizable uses of this science --- today,
there are over 12,000 products made from paper and its byproducts such
as pulp chemicals, including cosmetics, toothpaste, detergents, roofing
materials and much more. From nanotechnology to sustainability, join us
to learn some surprising things about the science and engineering of a
material that we all often take for granted.
Dr. Med Byrd, is a researcher in the Department of Wood and Paper
Science in the NCSU College of Natural Resources. He coordinates the
Undergraduate Paper Science and Engineering program for the College. His
research interests are mechanical pulping, chemical pulping and
bleaching, and non-wood pulping. Other areas of his research and
technical service are agricultured fibers and biomass. Dr. Byrd is a
member of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry.
