Natural Resource-Based Recreation

PRTM’s research in this area focuses on national and state parks, national and state forests, trails, greenways, rivers and their users. These environments can be in both urban and rural environments as well as wilderness, coastal areas, and other outdoor recreation settings where natural features are important to quality of the visitor experience. Recent research projects have focused on such topics as:

  • Protocols for monitoring the impact of long-term visitors in national parks and protected areas.
  • Approaches to reducing depreciative behavior on trails and rock climbing sites.
  • Management of National Wild and Scenic rivers.
  • Economic impacts of recreation visitation.
  • Behavioral impacts of satellite phones on Outward Bound trips.
  • Research to support management of visitor carrying capacity in national parks and protected areas.

Faculty conducting research in natural resource-based recreation include Roger Moore, Yu-Fai Leung, Aram Attarian, Chris Siderelis, Myron Floyd, and Hugh Devine.
