PRTM’s research in this area centers on identifying ways to improve recreation planning and management through the use of geospatial sciences. Applications range across recreation settings, including wilderness areas, linear recreation corridors (i.e., trails and rivers), nature-based state and national parks and forest recreation areas, historical and cultural parks, and urban parks and greenways. Recent projects include:

  • Applying geospatial technologies to develop sampling and measurement protocols for visitor impact monitoring in parks and protected areas.
  • Integrating visitation data into the IUCN-UNEP World Database on Protected Areas.

The Center for Earth Observation (CEO) at North Carolina State University (NCSU) is a multi-disciplinary research and training center, established in 1983 on the North Carolina State University campus. Our Geographic Information Science Research and Teaching Program specializes in the application of GIS technologies to natural resource management problems.

Faculty conducting research in this area include Hugh Devine and Yu-Fai Leung.
