Watershed Hydrology

FER Home : Watershed Hydrology

FER's watershed hydrology program includes academic offerings for both undergraduate and graduate students. We also conduct original research on topics related to water resources, sponsor extension activities to educate people on sound water management practices and frequently work on joint initiatives with other departments at NC State as well as government agencies and private organizations.

North Carolina’s abundant reservoirs, rivers, streams and waterways are legendary. They stretch from the white water rapids of the mountains to the slower, meandering rivers of the coast and include more than 37,000 miles of rivers and streams plus over 3,100 square miles of bays and harbors. These waters support countless forms of life, provide important economic benefits to the citizens of the state and serve as centers for recreation, tourism and residential communities. They also serve as a source of drinking water and support many critical industries.

The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources (FER) helps protect these vital resources through a comprehesive watershed hydrology program that often works with other areas at NC State — including veterinarian sciences, biology, engineering, agricultural sciences and botany — in order to support a well-rounded and interdisciplinary approach to its many water resource-related academic, research and extension activities.

Partnerships

For over a decade, the watershed hydrology program at NC State has worked with the North Carolina Division of Water Quality and the Division of Water Resources within the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources to address the scientific, conservation, engineering and regulatory implications of protecting our state’s water resources. In addition, FER faculty members have served on various technical advisory committees guiding forest and agricultural practices in North Carolina.

Through these and our other activities, FER helps groom future water hydrology leaders; broadens the education of conservationists and policymakers; and uncovers research breakthroughs to help protect the waters and people of North Carolina.
