The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources (FER) offers a comprehensive environmental impact assessment academic program that uses a multidisciplinary approach and encourages participation in real-world service projects.
In developing our environmental impact assessment academic programs for undergraduates and graduate students, FER has called on faculty from other areas within NC State to provide specialty courses in such areas as civil engineering, sociology, landscaping, public administration, economics and statistics.
Much of our teaching takes place during the implementation of actual service projects. To this end, we often collaborate with governmental and private partners to address basic and applied questions about environmental impact assessment. This work is done on a team basis — meaning FER students work side-by-side with specialists from all environmental and biological sciences at NC State plus experts in all contributing academic areas.
Our undergraduate program includes a major in Ecosystem Assessment that teaches an understanding of ecosystem structures and processes, as well as the science of measuring and monitoring natural resources. This science-based program provides a good foundation for an entry-level career in environmental impact assessment or for advanced studies in this field.
Our graduate level program includes a Masters of Science and a Masters of Natural Resources — Assessment and Analysis Technical Option. Both support a career in environmental impact assessment. Our graduate programs provide strong mentorship to students while emphasizing the scientific, scholarly and personal skills they will need to become leaders and original thinkers in this field.
